Battery Charger-Analyzer for Large Battery Systems ( 10 A-hr to 100 A-hr )

( See the New SuperMasterCharger as an Updated Replacement for this Product )

The  MasterCharger is a precision instrument designed to charge, trickle charge and analyze ( discharge ) Nickel-Cadmium, Sealed Lead-Acid and other types of rechargeable batteries.

With its multiple modes of operation ( Constant Current Charge [ dual and single rate ], Constant Current & Float Charge, Constant Current & Peak Stop Charge and  Full Discharge [ deep cycle ] ), the MasterCharger can satisfy the requirements of most large ( 10 A-hr to 100 A-hr ) rechargeable battery systems.

Additionally, the MasterCharger’s high voltage capabilities also allow for it to charge and analyze two batteries simultaneously, making the SuperMasterCharger the most powerful aviation battery charger/analyzer available on the market today.

The instrument features safety interlocks to protect the operator, the charger and the battery in the event of reversed polarity connection, short circuit, open circuit ( no load ) and over-voltage conditions.

Two large LED digital meters permit the simultaneous monitoring of voltage and current, while eight indicator lights display the status of the operation.

Other features include:

  • The MasterCharger is also designed for speed.  It can charge two Nickel-Cadmium batteries ( or any number of batteries where the total number of cells is 50 or less) at maximum current and it can also discharge two batteries with a power dissipation of up to 1500 W.
  • Dependability is another great plus of the MasterCharger.  Its 100% solid state circuitry requires no scheduled maintenance.  There are no relay contacts to inspect and clean. There are no high current carrying contacts to arc and burn. A simple performance verification procedure is all it takes to determine if the instrument requires recalibration or repair.
  • The MasterCharger is also protected against certain internal performance deviations and programming errors.  Additionally it is also designed to sense certain battery abnormalities to protect the instrument and battery from possible damage. In the event that any malfunction takes place visual and audible indicators will turn on, alerting the operator and preventing any further operation of the unit.
  • The specially designed circuitry provides a performance not achieved by any of the older conventional battery charging methods. The MasterCharger will deliver current into a short circuit , battery or combination of batteries totaling 50 cells, within ±1% of the set value, independent of line voltage variations ( when within ± 10% of the nominal line voltage ).
  • Two 3-1/2 digit LED meters provide the simultaneous monitoring of voltage and current on the charger and battery under test. The voltmeter can also be used independently by way of the two external meter lead jacks.
  • All new units ( “C” designation ) include an interface for operation with the BTAS-16 Computerized Battery Test System for monitoring and limited control

Suggested Accessory:  we recommend the  VCM-100 to simplify the task of testing and calibrating the Charger-Analyzer.

Specifications

Charge

  • Control:  SCR based
  • Maximum current:  50 A
  • Minimum increment:  0.1 A
  • Accuracy and stability of settings:  ± 1% of reading, ±0.1 A
    • Float:  The reference voltage is set at the equivalent of 2.33 V/cell (Lead-Acid). The Cell Selector provides the basic reference as nominal battery voltage, e.g. a 24 V battery is entered as 24 on the Cell Selector. Current reduction is from within 0.5 V of the programmed float voltage, with an accuracy of ± 1% of the programmed float voltage.
    • Peak:  The reference voltage is set at the equivalent of 2.45 V/cell (Lead-Acid). The Cell Selector provides the basic reference as nominal battery voltage, e.g. a 24 V battery is entered as 24 on the Cell Selector. Voltage transfer within ± 1% of the programmed Peak Voltage.
  • Modes:  Main and topping for constant current and constant voltage and peak voltage.
  • Timer:  1 to 9 hours for main charge time and 1 to 60 hours for total time. Time can also be programmed in minutes by selecting the fast mode in the timer circuit board.
  • Overtemp protection:  Four thermistors on the Temp-Plate measure the battery temperature and cut-off the charge when the surface temperature of the Temp-Plate reaches 39o C.
  • Over/under current protection:  A monitor circuit continuously compares the actual charge current with the programmed value and terminates the operation if they differ by more than 1 A
  • Overvoltage protection:  Programmable in accordance with the number of cells selected, at the equivalent of 1.7 V/cell, with an absolute maximum internal limit set at 85 V ( in constant current mode only )
  • Reverse polarity protection:  Operation of the unit is inhibited for reverse voltages greater than 0.5V.
  • Fusing:  Aircraft type current limiter

Discharge

  • Control:  Air cooled transistors
  • Maximum current:  60 A. Total power dissipation must not exceed 1.5 KW ( 1500 W ).
    • Note:  Discharge current is automatically limited to 30 AMPS for battery voltages in excess of 32 V.
  • Minimum increment:  0.1 A
  • Accuracy and stability of settings:  ±1% of reading, ±0.1 A
  • Modes:  Analysis ( automatic cut-off ) and deep cycle ( full discharge )
  • Terminal voltage:  Programmable in accordance with the number of cells selected, at the equivalent of 1 V/cell
  • Overheat protection:  Two thermistors measure the temperature of the bank of discharge transistors and cut off the operation if the transistors surface temperature exceeds 90o C
  • Over/under current protection:  A monitor circuit continuously compares the actual discharge current with the programmed value and terminates the operation of the unit if they differ by more than 1 A
  • Reverse polarity protection:  Operation of the unit is inhibited when a reverse voltages of greater than 0.5 V is detected
  • Fusing:  Aircraft type current limiter
